Season 2, Episode 21 Recap – SQL Server Agent Jobs with Steve Stedman and Mitchell Glasscock
In this episode of the Stedman SQL Server Podcast, we took a deep dive into SQL Server Agent Jobs—how they work, what to avoid, and how to get the most out of them in real-world environments.
At Stedman Solutions, we regularly see issues during performance assessments where Agent Jobs are misconfigured, neglected, or failing silently. We unpacked a number of critical best practices to help prevent that.
First up, we discussed the dangers of relying on SQL Server Maintenance Plans. They’re resource-heavy, inflexible, and often lead to redundant operations. Instead, we recommend scripting your maintenance using SQL Server Agent Jobs and leveraging Ola Hallengren’s Maintenance Solution. It’s efficient, customizable, and much more DBA-friendly.
We also introduced the concept of using startup steps in long-running jobs to ensure job history gets logged early—so you’re not left wondering if something is running or stuck. This can save serious time during troubleshooting.
Mitch then previewed a powerful upcoming feature in Database Health Monitor 3.0: a 24-hour visual Agent Job History Chart. This graph shows job duration and start times, helping you detect overlapping jobs and potential resource contention. We’ve already used it with clients to reschedule workloads and reduce CPU spikes and blocking.
Other critical points covered:
- Why not to reuse job schedules between jobs
- How to configure alerts for error codes like 823, 824, 825, and severity levels 19–25
- Why CHECKDB failures often go unnoticed—and how to set up notifications
- The importance of logging job step output for better troubleshooting
- Why documentation and detailed job descriptions are essential in team environments
We wrapped it all up with a reminder: proper Agent Job setup isn’t just about automation—it’s about visibility, stability, and disaster prevention. And if you’re not monitoring those jobs closely, you’re flying blind.
