Podcast Episode: Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) in SQL Server

In the latest episode of the Stedman Solutions SQL Server Podcast, Steve Stedman and Derrick Bovenkamp take a deep dive into Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)—a powerful feature in SQL Server that helps protect sensitive data by encrypting it at rest.

TDE has become more accessible in recent years, now available in SQL Server Standard Edition, not just Enterprise. It uses AES-256 encryption to secure your data files from unauthorized access in the event of a stolen backup or compromised disk. However, it’s important to understand that TDE only covers data at rest—it does not encrypt data in memory or during transmission. For those scenarios, SSL or TLS must be configured separately.

In this episode, we walk through the entire TDE setup process:

  • Creating the master key
  • Generating the certificate
  • Creating the database encryption key
  • Enabling encryption on the database

We also highlight why backing up your certificates and keys is crucial. Lose them, and you may lose your ability to restore or recover the encrypted data.

What about performance? TDE typically has minimal impact on database size and speed, but as always, we recommend testing in a non-production environment first before applying encryption to critical systems.

If you’re thinking about enabling TDE or want help evaluating your SQL Server security posture, schedule a call and let’s talk.
